Basket with Bird on Lid (Basket)

Sculptor and weaving artist Sarah Mickiyuk resides in Sanikiluaq (NU). In 1998, she obtained a certificate in Basket and Dollmaking from the Nunavut Arctic College. She is most known for her sea lyme grass baskets adorned with birds, seals, and owls' carvings. The artist mostly works with argillite, for which her community is famous. Sarah Mickiyuk travels to Qullisajanniavik (Tukajak Island, NU), where she spends several weeks collecting stones for her works. She goes as far as Kuujjuarapik (Nunavik, QC) to gather sea lyme grass, which she distributes to the women of her community so that they can make baskets.
